Tension in Rabat: Super Eagles Boycott Training Over Unpaid Bonuses Ahead of World Cup Qualifier

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have sparked major concerns just days before their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup Africa play-off semi-final against Gabon, as players and technical staff reportedly boycotted training in Rabat, Morocco, on Tuesday over long-standing unpaid bonuses.

According to Infosprint News, the squad refused to participate in training, protesting what they described as unresolved financial issues with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). BBC Sports journalist Oluwashina Okeleji revealed on X that the bonuses date back to 2019 and include allowances for their achievements in qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and advancing to the World Cup play-offs.

Okeleji further disclosed that none of the players have received their promised payments, adding that the team has grown “tired of empty promises.” A joint statement allegedly signed by both the players and coaching crew confirmed the protest, reading:

“The full squad, including officials, withheld from training today in Morocco because of unresolved issues with outstanding payments. The Super Eagles are awaiting a quick resolution to continue preparation for Thursday’s game with Gabon. Thank you. — From the players.”

The boycott was also verified by sports photojournalist Sulaimon Adebayo, who is currently with the team in Morocco.

When contacted, NFF Communications Director Ademola Olajire and Super Eagles media officer Promise Efoghe declined to provide immediate comments, though Efoghe acknowledged receiving inquiries.

Currently, 23 players are in camp, including captain William Troost-Ekong, Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, Chidera Ejuke, Alex Iwobi, Samuel Chukwueze, and Akor Adams. Others include Calvin Bassey, Chidozie Awaziem, Benjamin Frederick, Semi Ajayi, Zaidu Sanusi, Stanley Nwabali, Wilfred Ndidi, Frank Onyeka, Raphael Onyedika, Alhassan Yusuf, and Bright Osayi-Samuel.

Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye remains the only absentee, though he is expected to join soon after returning to form in Serie A with Udinese.

The Super Eagles had previously held their first full training session on Monday with 14 players, as head coach Eric Chelle intensified tactical drills. The team’s camp opened officially on Sunday at the Rive Hotel in Rabat, where technical staff had gathered to receive early arrivals.

The ongoing standoff now casts doubt over Nigeria’s readiness for Thursday’s all-important clash against Gabon, with fans hoping the issue is resolved swiftly to keep the country’s World Cup dreams alive.
