Nigeria books playoff spot with a commanding 4–0 victory over Benin in 2026 WCQ

Nigeria kept their 2026 World Cup ambitions alive with a dominant 4–0 victory over Benin in Uyo on Tuesday night, securing a place in the playoffs of the African qualifiers. The Super Eagles put on one of their most impressive performances of the qualifying campaign, led by a brilliant hat-trick from Victor Osimhen, with Frank Onyeka adding a late fourth goal.
Nigeria wasted no time asserting their dominance, taking the lead in just the third minute when Osimhen converted a clever pass from Samuel Chukwueze. The Galatasaray striker doubled the lead midway through the first half, rising highest to head home another precise delivery from Chukwueze. Benin tried to respond but were kept at bay.

Their few chances were well-handled by goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, while the defensive duo of Calvin Bassey and Bright Osayi-Samuel ensured the backline remained solid. Osimhen completed his hat-trick in the 51st minute, effectively sealing the game and underlining his status as one of Africa’s top forwards.

Nigeria continued to attack, with substitutes Olakunle Olusegun and Terem Moffi bringing fresh energy to the frontline. Despite trailing heavily, Benin still had a slim chance of finishing second but failed to capitalize on their opportunities.

Their frustration increased in stoppage time when Frank Onyeka finished off a brilliant run and cross from Moses Simon to make it 4–0. With the win, Nigeria finishes second in Group C and advances to the playoff stage of the CAF qualifiers, keeping their hopes alive of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
