Senate Rings Alarm: Nigeria Needs 100,000 New Soldiers to Tackle Surging T€rror Thre@t

The Nigerian Senate has called for the immediate recruitment of at least 100,000 new soldiers into the Armed Forces, citing the escalating wave of terrorism, banditry, and insecurity across the country. Lawmakers say the current strength of the military is “grossly inadequate” to confront the increasingly complex security challenges facing the nation.

The resolution followed a heated debate on the rising attacks in several states, with senators expressing concern that terrorists and armed groups are becoming more coordinated, daring, and widespread. According to the Senate, Nigeria must now pursue a “massive boost” in manpower and resources if it intends to reclaim territories and restore stability.

“The time for gradual steps is over,” one senator stated during plenary. “Nigeria needs an urgent, strategic expansion of our military personnel. The current numbers cannot effectively cover the vast landmass and multiple fronts where insecurity persists.”

The lawmakers emphasized that the proposed recruitment drive would not only strengthen the military’s operational capacity but also open job opportunities for thousands of young Nigerians eager to serve the nation.

In addition to manpower, the Senate urged the federal government to increase funding for modern military equipment, surveillance technology, and welfare packages for troops currently battling terrorists and insurgents on the frontlines.

Security analysts have long warned that without a substantial increase in personnel and equipment, the Armed Forces may remain overstretched, particularly as violent groups continue to take advantage of Nigeria’s porous borders and difficult terrain.

The Senate’s call comes at a time when communities in the North-East, North-West, and North-Central regions continue to suffer frequent attacks, leading to displacement, loss of lives, and disruption of economic activities.

As Nigerians look to the government for decisive action, public pressure is mounting for the implementation of bold, practical solutions—starting with strengthening the military’s capacity to protect lives and territory.
