Kebbi State, Nigeria — Armed gunmen attacked the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, abducting 25 female students in an overnight raid that has sparked national outrage and renewed concerns over student safety in northern Nigeria.
According to local authorities, the attackers stormed the school premises in the early hours, shooting sporadically before seizing the girls. A staff member, the vice-principal of the school was killed during the assault. One of the abducted girls reportedly managed to escape and return home, providing initial details to investigators.
Security forces, including local police and military units, have since launched a coordinated search-and-rescue mission across surrounding forests and border communities. The state government has condemned the attack, calling it “a tragic reminder of the persistent insecurity affecting our schools.”
The abduction comes amid an ongoing wave of kidnappings targeting educational institutions across northwestern and central Nigeria, where armed groups have increasingly turned to mass abductions for ransom.
Parents and community members gathered around the school on Monday morning, demanding swift action to rescue the missing students and calling for stronger security measures at learning centers.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm while investigations continue. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
